An Open Clinical Trial on the Effectiveness of Pinaverium bromide in the irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract
The Purpose of this paper is to assess the clinical therapeutic effectiveness and any possible untoward side reaction of pinaverium bromide in the irritable bowel syndrome in Korea.
Forty-two cases of irritable bowel syndrome were subjected to an open clinical trial at the out-patient clinic of Seoul National University Hospital. One to two tablets (50 to l00mg of pinaverium bromide were given orally after each meal 3 times a day for 2 to 4 weeks. The effectiveness was assessed by the subjective decision in 3 different arbitrary levels; excellent, good and not effective, and the cases with excellent or good responses to the drug were scored as effective.
Out of the 35 cases with abdominal pain or discomfort, 32(91.4%) were completely relieved from the symptom after 4 weeks of treatment. In the same way 29(90.6%) out of the 32 cases with changes in bowel habit were benefited by the treatment.
The general effect of the drug was excellent in 30 cases(71.5%) and good in 8(19.0%), so that the overall efficacy rate was 90.5%. Only in 4 cases(9.5%) the drug was not effective.
Although burning sense and pain were experienced in 3 cases and flatulence in 2, these symptoms were readily relieved by taking the drug right after meal or even during meal. Otherwise no significant untoward side effect of the drug was noted in this trial.
